We’ve had plenty of fun collaborations in the past with choral ensembles like the Milwaukee Youth Chorale, the UW-Eau Claire Concert Choir, the Alverno College Choir and the Stevan Sijacki Choir. Now, we’re gearing up for something completely different!
Coming up in mid-May, we have a really fun and unique collaboration opportunity with Danceworks. Danceworks has been a Milwaukee institution since 1992, and provides classes, outreach and performances for dancers and dance enthusiasts all throughout the area. It serves upward of 50,000 children and adults every year through classes, original performances and programming through schools. Needless to say, this is a really cool organization that is extremely committed to the Milwaukee arts scene and community involvement in general.
We were approached after our December 2014 concert at the Irish Cultural Heritage Center about a potential collaboration, in which we would provide music for a Danceworks performance. Here we are, nearly a year and a half later, and a lot of hard work has gone into creating an entirely unique performance. Here’s the description of the show:
Gather ye round for a performance that blends modern and magical movement with music. Join a princess, a knight and a two-headed dragon in a delightful experience for the whole family! Through captivating dance and charming storytelling, Danceworks Performance Company (DPC) will transport audiences to an enchanted land.
Longtime Danceworks creative collaborator, Jason Powell (Writing about Music / Dancing about Architecture, Temptation’s Snare, Plugged In), once again joins forces with DPC to bring his words to life in this newly envisioned madcap tale. The Quest’s heroine has been put under a scrambled sleeping spell that triggers irresistible bouts of slumber at the most inopportune moments. On her quest, the drowsy princess encounters familiar fantasy characters that add a magical spark to her journey.
For this concert, DPC is pleased to be collaborating with Chant Claire Chamber Choir, under the direction of Benjamin Bedroske. This Milwaukee choir will add a wide variety of musical styles—from ancient to contemporary, including newly composed songs by Powell with choral arrangements by Bedroske—to the performance. This integration allows the choir to become an extension of the dancers and the narration with an elastic score that creates the enchanting atmosphere. Embark with Danceworks on this not-to-be-missed Quest!
This is going to be a unique, awesome experience for us as a choir, and to be pairing with such a highly respected local organization is truly an honor. We will be singing some of our repertoire from this most recent concert, as well as from concerts of our past, all of which will lend to Powell’s original story.
We very much hope you will come out and support this event! Tickets to The Quest are $27 for premium reserved seats, $22 for general seats and $16 for students and seniors. For tickets, please call the Next Act box office at 414-278-0765, or purchase online at this link.
