Chant Claire Chamber Choir Presents “And On Earth Be Peace”

This year marks not only the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, but also the 100th anniversary of the death of Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry. Parry is well known for his ceremonial music including “I Was Glad” and “Jerusalem;” both heard at the Royal wedding in 2011. In addition to these two works, Chant Claire’s season centers around Parry’s a cappella magnum opus, “Songs of Farewell.” Composed during the First World War and the final years of the composer’s life, Parry’s six “Songs of Farewell” reflect on the failing health and uncertain faith of the composer. It may also be seen as a farewell to the world and the nation of Parry’s youth; irreversibly lost in the War.

Additionally, this year is the 200th anniversary of the composition of “Silent Night.” Within the first months of World War I, this carol was sung together by soldiers on both sides of the front during the Christmas Truce of 1914-a momentary glimpse of peace in the midst of the darkness and carnage of the War. The second half of this season’s concert meditates on the darkness and longing for peace in Advent, as well as the Christmas proclamation: “Glory to God in the Highest: And on Earth Be Peace.”
